a black powder rains down gently on my sleepness night

I couldn't sleep. But that was nothing new. It seemed to me I hadn't slept since the late nineties. So I lay on my side, hugging the little nobbly pillow I'd brought back from my parents' house, and watched the dawn slowly bleach the curtains (taken from "True Things About Me" by Deborah Kay Davies).
