off the wall
excerpt from James Rosenquist's "A Lot to Like, 1962" (seen at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art)
"For me things have to be life size or larger. I believe it is possible to bring something so close that you can see through it, so it comes to you right off the wall.
I like to bring things into unexpected immediacy - as if someone thrust something right next to your face - a beer bottle or his shirt cuff -
and said, how do you like it?" (J.R.)

a black powder rains down gently on my sleepness night
excerpt from Marsha Cottrell's "A Black Powder Rains Down Gently On My Sleepness Night, 2012"
(seen at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art)
I couldn't sleep. But that was nothing new. It seemed to me I hadn't slept since the late nineties. So I lay on my side, hugging the little nobbly pillow I'd brought back from my parents' house, and watched the dawn slowly bleach the curtains (taken from "True Things About Me" by Deborah Kay Davies).
